Toyota Extended Warranty

Whether it’s a brand-new or certified used vehicle, buyers of any one of Toyota’s many models likely will consider an extended warranty. A Toyota extended warranty can cover a variety of scenarios that standard warranties don’t, especially when it comes to used vehicles. Although off-brand extended warranties are available, Toyota offers its own comprehensive plans that span a range of needs.

Toyota’s warranties often require consumers to have their vehicle maintenance performed at a Toyota dealership or another Toyota-approved or -certified repair shop.

Most new vehicles come with a warranty in place—and many used cars do if transferred to a new owner before the original warranty is up—but these warranties are short-lived. Also, there are limits to the coverage that a factory warranty can offer.

Toyota extended warranties, however, cover a variety of situations and vehicle issues that other warranties may not. An extended warranty not only gives consumers peace of mind if something goes wrong with their vehicle, but many warranty options include regular preventative maintenance as well.

Depending on the accessory packages or other add-ons a consumer chooses for a new vehicle, a warranty likely is available to cover all those items, too. Here’s more on Toyota extended warranties, including new and certified used types.

Toyota Extended Warranty Costs

The most important thing to do when you’re deciding on extending your car’s warranty is the cost. Here’s what you can expect to pay:

Toyota Base Warranty

Every new Toyota is covered by a solidly comprehensive three-year, 36,000-mile warranty—whichever comes first. This new-vehicle basic-coverage warranty covers all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. This warranty is packaged in the price of your car, so there’s no additional charge.

Toyotas also receive five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain coverage, which encompasses engines, transmission/transaxle, front- and rear-wheel-drive systems, seatbelts and airbags. Rust-through coverage, also for five years, but, with this warranty, it extends for unlimited miles, encompasses corrosion perforation of sheet metal. Finally, emissions coverage is offered but is subject to state regulations.

The hybrid batteries in hybrid Toyotas, starting with the 2020 model year, are covered for 10 years from the date of first vehicle use or 150,000 miles. Hybrid batteries in earlier models are subject to eight-year, 100,000-mile warranties.

Toyota offers an accessories warranty, with genuine parts purchased at the time of a new-vehicle purchase covered for three years or 36,000 miles. Accessories bought after the date of purchase for a new vehicle are covered for a full year, regardless of mileage.

All new Toyotas come with ToyotaCare, a free maintenance plan that includes engine oil and filter changes, cabin air filter changes, tire rotations, multi-point inspections, fluid level inspections and adjustments, and 24-hour roadside assistance. ToyotaCare coverage lasts for two years or 25,000 miles, with roadside assistance lasting two full years regardless of mileage. The roadside-assistance feature includes battery jump starts, lockout protection, emergency fuel delivery, tire service, towing and winching.

ToyotaCare Plus extends coverage for as long as four years or 45,000 miles from the date a new vehicle was first put into service. Toyotas qualify for ToyotaCare Plus if they have no more than 31,000 miles and are within 37 months of the date of first use.

Investing in ToyotaCare Plus is relatively inexpensive and regarded as a worthwhile measure to take by many drivers to help care for their vehicle over the long road. Toyota genuine parts are used during all maintenance services covered under the plan.

Toyota Certified Used Warranty

Consumers can purchase a used Toyota from a private seller, dealership or even a car lot. Only select warranties, however, apply to used vehicles, and in any case, they must be Toyota certified, too.

The Toyota Certified Used Vehicles program ensures a used vehicle is in desirable shape and has warranty coverage against any future failures for a limited term. Only Toyota-certified authorized dealers can guarantee a vehicle is certified used.

Only vehicles that pass a 160-point inspection, are fewer than six model years old and have fewer than 85,000 miles receive this designation.

In general, Toyota vehicles in the Toyota Certified Used Vehicles program have benefits such as:

  • 12-month, 12,000-mile comprehensive warranty coverage
  • Seven-year, 100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty coverage
  • One year of roadside assistance
  • Free CARFAX vehicle history report
  • Financing rates at new-car levels
  • Transferable warranty coverage for resale value
  • Reconditioning to Toyota’s standards

For consumers looking to get a warranty for a used vehicle, the Toyota Certified Used Vehicles program is ideal for ensuring longevity and buyer protection.

Toyota Premium Warranty

With a range of extended warranty plans, many of which can work together, Toyota offers its vehicle owners comprehensive packages to cover almost any scenario. From vehicle damage in an accident to a popped tire on the freeway, the packages cover common driving hazards and vehicle problems. But those aren’t the only benefits to extended warranties.

Whichever plan a consumer chooses, with a new vehicle, the price of the warranty is rolled into the overall vehicle cost or the loan amount. Not only are vehicle maintenance plans included in the extended warranty coverage options, eliminating the need to spend out-of-pocket for regular service, but this ensures that vehicle owners stick with having service done regularly.

Vehicles that receive regular service tend to perform better. Plus, they retain their value longer as there’s less likelihood of a breakdown when a vehicle has regular oil and filter changes, tune-ups and other preventative measures.

Estimated Toyota Extended Warranty Values

It is certainly challenging to estimate the value of a Toyota extended warranty because each vehicle is different. One thing is certain, however. For every automobile owner, it’s not a question of if your vehicle will break down but when.

No matter whether you own the cheapest or costliest vehicle in a brand’s fleet, there will come a time when you’ll be faced with significant repair bills.

Is it Better to Pay out of Pocket?

Toyota owners who feel the need for extended warranty coverage can’t go wrong with any one of the manufacturer’s plans.

Toyota extended warranty options are available for every car, truck, SUV and minivan in Toyota’s lineup. The key to keeping a Toyota on the road as long as possible is ensuring it’s well-maintained over time, something all consumers with extended warranties can almost guarantee.
