Hyundai Extended Warranty

One reason Hyundai is prized as an automobile manufacturer is for its long-term warranty plans. Hyundai proudly proclaims that it offers "America's Best Warranty." In addition to its extended warranty, Hyundai also offers a new-vehicle manufacturer's warranty that is longer than most new-vehicle warranties.

Hyundai's manufacturer's warranty is for five years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. The majority of new-vehicle warranties are for only three years or 36,000 miles.

The company also offers several additional tiers of coverage in the Hyundai base warranty. This coverage includes a 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, seven-year/unlimited-mile anti-perforation warranty, five-year/unlimited-mile 24-hour roadside assistance and 12-month/12,000-mile replacement parts and accessories limited warranty.

These plans also include a seven-year/70,000-mile California emissions control systems warranty, eight-year/80,000-mile federal emissions defect and performance warranty and, lastly, a lifetime hybrid battery warranty.

Hyundai Warranty Coverage

A Hyundai extended warranty covers more than the manufacturer’s warranty that comes with the purchase of your new vehicle. First we’ll explore what warranty coverage comes with the purchase of your new vehicle, and then we’ll dive into what a Hyundai extended warranty covers.

Hyundai Base Warranty

Hyundai’s base warranty is for five years or 50,000 miles, which is two years or 14,000 miles longer than most vehicle manufacturers’ base warranties. This warranty covers the repair or replacement of any Hyundai-made or -installed component that is defective in material or factory workmanship, maintenance and under normal use. This warranty covers radio and audio systems, paint, battery, air conditioner refrigerant charge, adjustments and wear items such as belts, brake pads and linings, clutch linings, filters, wiper blades, bulbs and fuses.

The 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty covers the repair or replacement of powertrain components such as the engine, transmission components and transaxle that were manufactured or installed by Hyundai. This coverage applies to the original owner only, with subsequent owners receiving five-year/60,000-mile coverage. The seven-year/unlimited-mile anti-perforation warranty covers perforation, or rust holes through the body panel from inside to outside, corrosion of original Hyundai body sheet metal and excludes surface corrosion.

Hyundai’s 12-month/12,000-mile replacement parts and accessories limited warranty covers repair or replacement of Hyundai genuine replacement parts or accessories supplied by Hyundai. Genuine Hyundai parts or accessories that are supplied by Hyundai and purchased from an authorized Hyundai dealer but not installed by an authorized Hyundai dealer, are covered for 12 months/unlimited miles. Accessories installed on an automobile before or at the time of the vehicle’s date of first use are covered under the five-year/60,000-mile new-vehicle limited warranty. Accessories installed after the vehicle’s date of first use are covered for 12 months/12,000 miles.

The Hyundai base warranty also includes a seven-year/70,000-mile California emissions control systems warranty that applies to automobiles manufactured to California specifications and are distributed by Hyundai and registered in the following states: California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.

Hyundai also packages coverage for eight years or 80,000 miles for federal emissions defect and performance under its base warranty. This protection covers the repair or replacement of Hyundai major emissions control components that may cause the vehicle to fail to conform to an applicable EPA-approved inspection/maintenance program. These components include the catalytic converter, engine control module and onboard emissions diagnostic device. Hyundai backs up its hybrid batteries with lifetime warranties for the original owner, with subsequent owners gaining battery protection for 10 years or 100,000 miles. This warranty covers the hybrid starter/generator, hybrid power control unit and automatic transmission for 10 years or 100,000 miles irregardless of owner.

Finally, Honda’s base warranty includes five years over unlimited miles of 24-hour roadside assistance.

Hyundai Extended Warranty

The Hyundai extended warranty is known as the Hyundai Protection Plan and it comes in three forms: Powertrain, Gold and Platinum. Providing routine maintenance and extended mechanical coverage, the Hyundai Protection Plan protects your vehicle from unexpected repairs.

Under the Hyundai Protection Plan is the Vehicle Service Contract, offering coverage for mechanical repairs, parts, labor and roadside assistance for 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

As part of this repair coverage, Hyundai owners pay nothing except for a deductible at the time of repair. Moreover, this cost may be rolled in to your automobile financing plan.

The Hyundai extended warranty Powertrain coverage extends to the engine, transmission and drive axle. The Gold package covers these powertrain elements but also extends to climate-control systems, shocks, front and rear suspension, fuel system and electrical system.

The Platinum package is the most comprehensive. Beyond covering all the parts included in the Gold plan, Platinum covers steering, brakes, CV boots, navigation, the audio system and high-tech components.

As part of the Hyundai extended warranty, owners receive genuine Hyundai parts and service at nationwide participating Hyundai dealers and other authorized service providers. The warranty includes round-the-clock roadside assistance, with towing to your nearest dealership or authorized service provider. Rental car reimbursement of as much as $35 a day for as long as 10 days along with trip-interruption coverage of as much as $200 per day for five days are included.

Estimated Hyundai Extended Warranty Values

It’s impossible to pin down the value of Hyundai extended warranty values. Hyundai’s Powertrain, Gold and Platinum packages cover different parts and components, and Hyundai owners may experience different levels of repair needs based on driving style and environmental conditions.

Hyundai Protection Plans have been designed for lessees who are buying their vehicles along with original Hyundai owners to help protect from unanticipated expenses and the costs associated with them. Hyundai aims to deliver benefits beyond your factory warranty, with coverage for mechanical repairs that include parts and labor for another 10 years or 100,000 miles. Covered repairs won’t cost you a dime outside your deductible.

Is It Better to Pay out of Pocket?

An extended warranty for an automobile is much like medical or house insurance. It is a safeguard for when unforeseen repairs come up. If you are not a risk-taker, an extended warranty is a valuable investment to make. Perhaps you don’t tuck away enough money in an emergency fund to cover unforeseen repairs. Whatever the case, a Hyundai extended warranty may prove to be extremely valuable to you one day.

Even if you never take full advantage of your Hyundai extended warranty, it may relieve yourself of financial stress connected to the thought of having to one day pay steep vehicle repair costs. This reason alone may make purchasing an extended warranty worthwhile. Of course, the main reason to buy one is that it will cover repairs if needed and save you money from unexpected and potentially very costly repairs. Because an extended warranty can be financed in your monthly bill at the time of your vehicle purchase, it makes planning for future repairs affordable and less hard-hitting when they’re pricey.
