GMC Extended Warranty

A GMC Extended Warranty is something to put some thought into. An extended warranty will help you keep your GMC vehicle performing at it's best with little or no unexpected repair expenses for you.

When you purchase a new GMC vehicle, it will come with a new vehicle limited manufacturer's warranty. You will receive bumper-to-bumper coverage for 3 years or 36,000 miles whichever occurs first. With the optional GMC extended warranty, you will get additional coverage of 5 years or 60,000 miles whichever occurs first.

The GMC extended warranty is fully backed by General Motors. It is transferable, which I'll cover later here. This is a great asset for your vehicle in case you ever decide to sell it. There is no deductible on either the bumper-to-bumper warranty or the GMC Extended Warranty. A GMC extended warranty will cover your entire vehicle for repairs, including parts and labor to correct materials and workmanship. Needed repairs may utilize new, remanufactured or refurbished parts.

Here are some popular GMC vehicles, all of which come with the option of purchasing an extended warranty: Acadia, Canyon, Savana Cargo Van, Savana Passenger Van, Sierra 1500, Sierra 1500 Limited, Sierra 2500 HD, Sierra 3500 HD, Terrain, and Yukon.

What Is Covered By A GMC Extended Warranty?

You will have the option of purchasing different components to a GMC extended warranty. The main value that you will be getting is the additional coverage of 5 years or 60,00 miles whichever occurs first. But you can also choose to receive some other protections. Let's take a look at what's covered when you purchase an extended warranty.

All internally lubricated parts, engine oil, cooling hoses and lines. Also included are all actuators and electrical components internal to the engine, cylinder head, block, timing gears, timing chain, timing cover, oil pump/oil pump housing, OHC carriers, valve covers, oil pan, seals, gaskets, turbocharger, supercharger and all internal lubricated parts as well as manifolds, flywheel, water pump, harmonic balancer and engine mount. Timing belts are covered until the first scheduled maintenance interval.

Exclusions: Excluded from the powertrain coverage are sensors, wiring, connectors, engine radiator, coolant hoses, coolant, and heater core. Coverage on the engine cooling system begins at the inlet to the water pump and ends with the thermostat housing and/or outlet that attaches to the return hose. Also excluded is the starter motor, entire pressurized fuel system (in-tank fuel pump, pressure lines, fuel rail(s), regulator, injectors, and return line) as well as the Engine/Powertrain Control Module and/or module programming.

All internally lubricated parts, case, torque converter, mounts, seals, and gaskets as well as any electrical components internal to the transmission/transaxle. Also covered are the actuators directly connected to the transmission (slave cylinder, etc.).

Exclusions: Excluded from the powertrain coverage are transmission cooling lines, hoses, radiator, sensors, wiring, and electrical connectors. Also excluded are the clutch and pressure plate as well as any Transmission Control Module and/or Module programming.

Transfer Case

All internally lubricated parts, case, mounts, seals, and gaskets as well as any electrical components internal to the transfer case. Also covered are any actuators directly connected to the transfer case as well as the encoder motor.

Exclusions: Excluded from the power-train coverage are transfer case cooling lines, hoses, radiator, sensors, wiring, and electrical connectors as well as the transfer case control module and/or module programming.

Courtesy Transportation Program

During the warranty coverage period, GMC provides alternate transportation and/or reimbursement of certain transportation expenses under the Courtesy Transportation Program if your vehicle requires warranty repairs. Several transportation options are available.

Roadside Assistance

GMC is proud to offer the response, security, and convenience of the 24-hour Roadside Assistance Program for a period of 5 years/60,000 miles, whichever comes first. Refer to your Owner’s Manual for details, or consult your dealer/retailer. The Roadside Assistance contact information is listed in the Customer Assistance Offices section of the Warranty and Owner Assistance Information booklet.

What Isn't Covered

All the items that I just went over are not covered for damage due to an accident, misuse, alteration, insufficient or improper maintenance, contaminated or poor quality fuel, damage or corrosion due to chemical treatments or Aftermarket Products, impact, use or environment.

Rust-Through Protection Covered For 6 Years/100,000 Miles

Any body sheet metal panel that rusts through, an actual hole in the sheet metal, is covered for up to 6 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Protection Plan

The GMC protection plan allows you to choose from Silver or Platinum coverage, along with your deductible and contract term. The protection plan comes with extras such as additional coverage for approved repairs, including lost key or lockout, trip interruption, towing and road service, and rental car reimbursement. If a breakdown occurs that is covered, you'll have access to a certified service technician at any one of the 4,000 plus GM dealerships nationwide. These technicians are highly trained to work on GM vehicles. They will use the same quality parts as are used when your GMC vehicle was first built.

GMC Used Car Warranty

When you purchase a GMC used car, also known as a certified pre-owned vehicle from GMC, you will have options for warranty coverage. It does not matter whether you purchase it from a private seller or an independent dealer. You will still be eligible to receive comprehensive used-vehicle benefits package.  A GMC Certified Pre-owned vehicle will be inspected and reconditioned before you buy it. It will be backed by two factory-backed warranties. The first being a 6-year or 100,000-mile Power-train Limited Warranty. This includes roadside assistance. It will also include a 12-month or 12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty. A benefit of purchasing a GMC Used Car covered by the GMC warranty is that before a certified pre-owned vehicle is sold or listed for sale, it is required by GM to complete all safety recalls. This is a huge benefit to purchasing a  GMC Certified Pre-owned vehicle. You can never be too safe when it comes to vehicles.

Is A GMC Extended Warranty Transferable?

If you purchase a GMC extended warranty and sell it before the warranty is up, it is transferable to the new owner. The same goes for if you buy a certified used GMC vehicle with an extended warranty. An extended warranty generally makes your vehicle more valuable than if it was not covered under warranty. While the Bluebook price may not reflect a higher value, wise buyers should see that they are also getting an extended warranty thrown in the deal.

Why Buy An Extended Warranty?

A GMC extended warranty is much like purchasing any kind of insurance. Buying an extended warranty is like buying a safeguard for when unforeseen repairs come up. If you are not a risk-taker, an extended warranty is a great choice. Or maybe you don't keep enough in an emergency fund to cover unforeseen repairs. Whatever the case, an extended warranty may take the stress away. Even if you never use it, it may make you feel better to not worry what might happen if you need a costly repair. That in itself may make an extended warranty valuable to you.
Of course, the main reason to buy an extended warranty is that it will cover repairs if needed and save you money. The average rate for a mechanic is around $100 per hour. Because an extended warranty can be financed into your monthly bill at the time of your Honda purchase, it makes future repairs affordable.

Here are some other reasons that you should buy an extended warranty:

  • Convenience - If something goes wrong with your GMC vehicle while it is under warranty, you can just drop it off at a GMC dealer to have it fixed. You won't have to seek out a mechanic to try to troubleshoot what is going wrong. You also won't have to try to self diagnose the problem. There will be no long hours on google, troubleshooting or looking at where to buy parts. Just drop it off at a certified GMC mechanic and go. Convenience means time for more important things in life. And time also can mean money.
  • Worry-free Automobile Ownership - With an extended warranty you won't have to worry about how you will pay your bill if big repairs come up. An extended warranty can take the stress out of vehicle ownership. Many people have lost sleep and worried about how they would pay for unexpected auto repairs that their vehicle was needing. By buying an extended warranty you are taking that stress away.
  • Greater Value - If you sell your GMC vehicle and can show that it was under warranty while you owned it, it will have a greater market value. Why? Because statistics show that vehicles under warranty are better-taken care of than vehicles not under warranty. Also, you could transfer your warranty to the new owner if the vehicle still had miles or years left on the warranty. This is seldom looked at the benefit of purchasing an extended warranty.
  • No Unexpected Big Expenses - This last benefit that I'm going to go over is self-explanatory and also the number one reason that many people purchase extended warranties. Because your vehicle is under warranty you won't have to shell out the money if something goes wrong that is covered under warranty.

GMC Used Car Warranty

The GMC used car warranty is also referred to as GMC certified pre-owned vehicle limited warranty. This warranty will provide power-train coverage for 7 years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first. This same warranty provides non-power-train coverage for 1 year or 12,000 miles to 4 years or 48,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

Things To Consider When Purchasing A GMC Extended Warranty

Let's take a look at some things to consider when you are contemplating purchasing a GMC extended warranty:

  • Your extended warranty may not cover all the repairs. Make sure to read the fine print. I've covered what each level of a GMC extended warranty covers but make sure before you buy one to read the warranty policy in detail. It always makes good practice to read about what you are purchasing. It may take awhile reading that fine print, but it is wise to do so.
  • You may never use the extended warranty. The facts are that an extended warranty costs money and in the long run, the auto world makes more money off the fact that they sell more extended warranties than it cost to fix those repairs covered by the extended warranty. This doesn't mean that you won't benefit from an extended warranty, but on the flip side, you may never use it. In that case, it is wasted money. It really is a gamble. Upon researching extended warranties, the statistics varied based on the study, but a lot of people never used their extended warranties.

Can I Buy An Extended Warranty After Purchasing A Vehicle?

Yes, you can buy an extended warranty after purchasing a new GMC vehicle. But when you go to buy a new GMC vehicle, chances are good that the dealer will try to sell you an extended warranty that day. For the dealer, they obtain the sale early and get their sales perks if you buy it right away. For the consumer, it may be of benefit to buy the coverage right away, because it can be calculated into monthly payments. But keep in mind, that you can purchase an extended warranty, anytime before your manufacturer's limited is up. However, you may find that the cost increases as your car gets older. Also, inflation may have increased the cost of the extended warranty if you wait to purchase it.

Can I Cancel My GMC Extended Warranty

If for any reason you change your mind and want to cancel your GMC extended warranty, you can do so if you haven't used any of the warranty services. You will have to make the cancellation within the allowable amount of days of purchase to receive a full refund. Make sure to contact your GMC dealership without delay when or if you decide to cancel your policy.

GMC Extended Warranty Conclusion

I've gone over in detail the GMC Extended Warranty. By buying a GMC Extended Warranty, you are purchasing security and protecting your wallet from unforeseen expenses. An extended warranty will also add value to your vehicle, if you sell it. Once your vehicle is inspected and gets labeled as a certified pre-owned vehicle, it will be more marketable to protential buyers. You can purchase a GMC extended warranty at the time of new vehicle purchase, or wait until before your manufacturer's warranty runs out to purchase it.
